MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

INJECTION MOULDING

In Injection Moulding, molten plastic is forced from a heated cylinder under pressure into a cavity of a confined mould. The part is then cooled, solidified and removed. RPC M&H Plastics has over 70 injection moulding machines.

A large range of standard and custom moulded caps and closures are available in COPP, PP, PE, SAN and BDS.

Additionally, we can supply jars and containers in SAN and PP, in single or double wall, with capacities from 2ml to 1400ml.

MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

EXTRUSION BLOW-MOULDING

In the standard blow-moulding process a warm plastic parison (hollow tube) is placed between the two halves of a mould cavity and air pressure forces the plastic into the precise shape of the cavity.

RPC M&H Plastics has over 60 blow moulding machines creating bottles up to 1000ml from PE, PP, PVC and PETG materials. With the large number of standard machines, the company has excellent production flexibility. For example, several slightly different types of bottle can be run in parallel for shorter lead times.

MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

INJECTION STRETCH BLOW-MOULDING

In this process a plastic preformed PET component is formed by injection moulding on the machine. This preform is then stretched and blown into the container shape using a separate mould.

PET bottles and jars are noted for their glass-like clarity, strength and barrier properties that preserve the product’s quality, protect against damage and display the contents superbly. RPC M&H Plastics has over 20 injection stretch blowmoulding machines.

MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

INJECTION BLOW-MOULDING

This process bridges the gap between blowmoulding and injection stretch blowmoulding providing scrap-free production of containers with an injection moulded neck finish.

The key benefit is outstanding control of part tolerances, finish and weight/volume which means wide mouth containers can be produced with injection moulded tolerance necks. In addition there is no waste from de-flashing resulting in reduced energy consumption and better material utilisation.

The machine is a medical specification to satisfy the demands for controlled ‘clean room’ standards.

MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

FLEXIBLE TUBES

RPC M&H Plastics has state-of-the-art lines to create tubes to your exact requirements. We can manufacture a million tubes a week which can be customised in terms of size, material, colour, closure style, cap colour and decoration. The company offers a complete decoration services that includes flexographic and silk screenprinting, hot foil blocking and labelling.

Over the previous years the company has invested significantly in the development of new tube technology and plans to continue a policy of further investment in order to provide innovative products.

PP: Polypropylene

The ‘workhorse’ of the plastics industry, polypropylene is one of the high-volume “commodity” thermoplastics. It has low density, is fairly rigid, has a high heat distortion temperature of up to 95°C (making it suitable for “hot-fill” packaging applications), and excellent chemical resistance and electrical properties.

COPP: Co-polymer Polypropylene

This is a specially modified highly transparent polypropylene random copolymer with medium melt flow, intended for injection moulding and injection stretch blow moulding. In addition to these properties, COPP is the best material for active hinges.

PE: Polyethylene

A thermoplastic material composed of polymers of ethylene. Polyethylene is the most widely produced polymer available in various densities.

HDPE: High Density Polyethylene

Its comparatively high density gives HDPE high stiffness, good temperature resistance and very good water vapour barrier properties.

LDPE: Low Density Polyethylene

Commonly used for reducer plugs in packaging, or can be blended with HDPE to adjust overall density.

LLDPE: Linear Low Density Polyethylene

Typically used for tubes, LLDPE is a material that is slightly stiffer and more stable than LDPE. It is also less prone to warpage and distortion on thin section mouldings.

PET: Polyethylene Terephthalate

PET plastics are clear in appearance and are available in a range of colours. Although lightweight, PET is tough and a good defence to gases and liquids. It is also highly resistant to dilute acids, oils and alcohols.

PETG: Glycol – Modified Polyethylene Terephthalate

This is a durable material with an excellent gloss, clarity and sparkle that makes for very clear bottles. PETG can be processed via conventional extrusion blow-moulding methods, generally on machines designed to process PVC. It is popularly used for shampoos, soaps, and detergents. The chemical resistance of PETG is fair, but compatibility testing is recommended, especially with products that contain alcohol.

PCTG: Poly – Cyclohexylenedimethylene Terephthalate Glycol

This co-polyester material is similar to PETG and can be processed in the same manner. It has better chemical resistance and is generally easier to process than PETG. It can also create larger capacity and heavier weight containers through extrusion blowmoulding processes than with PETG.

PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride

A thermoplastic material composed of polymers of vinyl chloride, PVC is a colourless solid with outstanding resistance to water, alcohols, and concentrated acids and alkalis. It is used in unplasticised form for the production of containers such as liquid hand soaps, shampoos and bubble baths.

BDS: Butadiene – Styrene Block Copolymer

Has the clarity of SAN, but with the addition of an impact modifier. This allows moulding to flex without fractures.

SAN: Styrene – Acrylonitrile Resins

The SAN copolymer generally contains 70 to 80% styrene and 20 to 30% acrylonitrile. This combination provides higher strength, rigidity, and chemical resistance than polystyrene, but it is not quite as clear as crystal polystyrene and its appearance tends to yellow more quickly.

PS: Polystyrene

Protects against moisture and maintains its strength and shape even after long periods of time. Offers high clarity and rigidity.

PCR: Post Consumer Recycled material

With the increased awareness of protecting the environment and consumer awareness for the need to recycle, we re able to offer post consumer recycled material, which is re-used, broken down plastic bottles and containers. PCR can be offered between 25 -100% and in PET, HDPE and PP, and can be used for injection, blowmoulding and extrusion processing requirements. Where PCR cannot be used for technical reasons PIR (Post Industrial Regrind) is available.

KEY:

HDPE = High Density Polyethylene
LDPE = Low Density Polyethylene
PP = Polypropylene
PVC = Polyvinyl chloride
PS = Polystyrene
SBC = Styrene Butadiene Co-polymer
PET = Polyethylene Terephthalate
PETG = Glycol Modified Polyethylene Terephthalate
PCTG = Poly (Cyclohexylene Dimethylene Terephthalate) Glycol
SAN = Styrene Acrylonitrile

E = Excellent, VG = Very Good, G = Good, F = Fair, P = Poor, U = Unsatisfactory
M = Moderate, H = High
C = Clear, SO = Semi Opaque, O = Opaque

Please note: There are many grades of each material and these are to be used as a guide only. We strongly recommend you carry out your own tests to approve material compatibility.

The Plastics ID Code identifies the type of plastic resin from which a product is made. The Society of the Plastics Industry introduced the system in 1988 in response to demands for easier recycling of post consumer plastics. The code was therefore developed to help recyclers by providing manufacturers with a uniform system. Since 1988 a wide range of plastics has been developed which are not covered by an individual number – these plastics are identified within the “7 other” classification. M&H adopt this system as it is the only globally recognised system available.

RPC M&H Plastics is able to offer a range of different materials to meet increased demand for environmentally-responsive products. These include:

  • PCR (Post Consumer Regrind)
  • PLA (Polylactic Acid)
  • Sugarcane Polymer
  • Eco-friendly Printing

The company is committed to minimising energy use throughout all its activities, including investing in low-energy technology for manufacturing systems and working in partnership with customers delivering first-class products which are kinder to the planet.

PCR (Post Consumer Regrind)

  • PCR is plastic products that have been recycled, which means they have been reprocessed to be re-used in new manufacturing
  • PCR conserves energy and non-renewable resources as recycling replaces the need for primary extraction and the manufacture of new plastics
  • RPC M&H Plastics offers a range of PCR material for use in the production of plastic bottles and jars at levels of between 25% – 100% in PET and HDPE
  • PCR tubes are available for use with PE starting at 25% PCR material

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

  • PLA is a compostable polymer derived from renewable sources such as corn starch
  • RPC M&H Plastics has trialled PLA in various manufacturing processes and the results to date have been promising although there are some limitations on what can be produced
  • We would be happy to develop this further in partnership with a customer – please contact our Sales Team to discuss

Sugarcane polymer

  • Polymer made using bio-oil derived from sugar cane rather than traditional oil
  • RPC M&H Plastics Beccles is currently producing sugarcane flexible tubes and developing bottles along with RPC M&H Plastics Winchester for the packaging market
  • Retains same properties of traditional oil-based polymers
  • 100% renewable
  • Possible to achieve negative carbon footprint
  • Investigating Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF) source, Bio-polymer equivalent to PET
  • Sugarcane Closures also available.

Eco-friendly printing

Printing adds very little gram weight to the product. In addition label materials are sometimes inconsistent with the bottle which can hinder recycling.

RPC M&H Plastics operates an Integrated Management System which embraces Quality Management, Environmental Management and Health & Safety Management.
