What are medical devices?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classifies medical devices as ‘any instrument, apparatus, implement, machine, appliance, implant, reagent for in vitro use, software, material or other similar or related article, intended by the manufacturer to be used, alone or in combination for a medical purpose.’ This definition is also the one used by the NHS across the UK and reflects the wide cover given to medical devices and the importance of these from every day through to the complex items only found in specialist environments.
